Australia Day Palm Cove 2006

On 26th January 2006 Palm Cove hosted the morning Activities for the official Australia Day celebrations. The day was sponsored by Tourism Palm Cove’s members and included fun for families and beach-goers alike. There were fantastic prizes to be won and plenty of food for everyone.

The day started early at 7am with a continuous breakfast cooked by the Marlin Coast Rotary. Visitors to the village could enjoy a hardy Australia breakfast whilst listening to music by Australiana band Snake Gully.

After breakfast the Cairns Surf Lifesaving Club Palm Cove conducted a serious of beach demonstrations, including life saving and resuscitation. Everyone kicked up their heels and rocked to the music when the fantastic kids from Barrier Reef Rockers showed amazing rhythm during their dancing displays.

Mayor Kevin Byrne was in attendance for the official Australia Day cake cutting. Once the formalities were over it was time to visit the markets and displays for some retail therapy at the local artists’ stalls.

The morning was hosted by Event MC, local radio personality 4CA FM’s “Murray Jones”; he highlighted all the events on for the morning including, a Vintage Car and Classic Car drive through and display, Harley Riders' Association drive through and display; there were many fun beach competitions including sand building competitions, pie & lamington eating competitions and many more. The annual Fishing competition was held on the Palm Cove Jetty and Australian sheep dogs were there to round up those unpredictable ducks.

Cairns Tropical Zoo kindly brought some Australian animals to visit the beach-goers including fluffy the crocodile, a wombat and of course everyone’s favourite koalas.

The kids loved the hay rides and the stockman with a whip cracking display, and the horsemanship demonstration was a real delight.

It was certainly a fun day for all who attended.

Palm Cove was also the venue for the Australia Day breakfast in 2005.
